Here's what some of the experts have to say
about the first issue of CAPTAIN
AWARENESS...
"After reviewing the first book, CAPTAIN AWARENESS: ASSAULT ON CAMPUS, in your series of educational cartoon books, I am pleased to let you know that RAINN would like its national hotline (1-800-656-HOPE) to be listed as a resource for your readers. CAPTAIN AWARENESS: ASSAULT ON CAMPUS is well-written and shows a real understanding of the issue. The graphics are vibrant and exciting. Most importantly, the book shows a real respect for the issue of assault and this crime's impact on victims.
It is our goal at RAINN to raise awareness of the national hotline so that women (and men) know where to turn if they (or a friend or family member) are a victim of this violent crime. Publications like CAPTAIN AWARENESS will help us to achieve this goal. Thank you for this opportunity. Also, I applaud your dedication to this project and would like to congratulate you (and the other artists involved) on producing a unique, informative, and interesting tool that will be a great resource."

Rape Abuse & Incest National Network

"CAPTAIN AWARENESS is well-done--a reminder that super-hero cartoon books have a responsibility to champion morality, as well as to entertain, and CAPTAIN AWARENESS accomplishes both of these goals with style."

KINGDOM COME

"I enjoyed CAPTAIN AWARENESS: ASSAULT ON CAMPUS. This is indeed a novel approach to heightening public awareness of problems on school campuses.
As we all know, prevention can be the single most important factor in avoiding victimization. Staying cautious and alert are always the best tools for fighting crime and keeping safe. And projects such as CAPTAIN AWARENESS have the potential to grab students' attention in an entertaining, yet educational manner and reinforce the message of safety and vigilance.
I'd like to personally commend you for your efforts to educate students and wish you success with your venture."

Safety, Volusia County, FL

"I read the title and thought 'this is going to be a corny book with a corny title like this'. I could not have been more WRONG. D. DeAngelo took a serious subject like assault and made a wonderful novel approach at teaching us all how to 'be aware'. I truly thought this would be some corny hand-out brochure, but the story just pulled me in like a magnet, and the art (by all these great artists) took me away, where I had no choice but to keep turning the pages. The writing made me look at assault in a way that I had never thought about before, and best of all, this book taught me something...and if I may use a quote from this book, 'Knowledge Is Power'."

"AWSDA appreciates your efforts towards promoting awareness about assault. Your work is unique, and will certainly reach out to an audience that may not otherwise have exposure to this valuable information. The American Women's Self-Defense Association is pleased to be a part of the CAPTAIN AWARENESS program, and we look forward to working with you in the future."

"Below is a message from the director of our schools division. He details what the kids had to say about CAPTAIN AWARENESS: 'The feedback that I received from a few of the Generation NeXt participants (one of our programs) was very favorable. They thought that it read well, incorporated important information, [and that] the subject matter was serious and well-handled. The participants liked that many had a hand in support at the end and felt they would recommend it to a friend.'"

"Regarding CAPTAIN AWARENESS, it's a handsome piece of work...after all, look at all the great artists you have working with you! It's also an effective polemic, simple and direct and clear about its point, which is an important one. Your book DID get me thinking, which is it's primary objective, yes? So, it's a success."

"The American College Counseling Association provides its endorsement of CAPTAIN AWARENESS: ASSAULT ON CAMPUS. The material reveals a clear understanding of the many variables associated with assault issues on college campuses. Raising awareness and providing education, two important factors in combating assault, are quite effectively conveyed through the media of a cartoon book. The illustrations are vivid and engaging, the text is relevant, the content avoids preaching, and the subject matter is treated with respect for its importance.
College students are more likely to pick up and glance through something that appeals to the eye and presents information simply and in story-form, than they are to pick up boring pamphlets. We must meet our students where they are if we are to combat assault on college campuses, and the CAPTAIN AWARENESS: ASSAULT ON CAMPUS book certainly goes a long way in doing that."
--Keren M. Humphrey, Media Chair, American College
Counseling Association

"I think your CAPTAIN AWARENESS idea is brilliant. One of the greatest strengths of cartoon books is their potential for use as a powerful educational tool. The U.S. government knew this when they hired Will Eisner [creator of THE SPIRIT] to do wartime educational material, but they seem to have forgotten about it since then. So, it made me doubly pleased to see how well you'd done it with your ASSAULT ON CAMPUS edition.
I try to involve real-life issues wherever possible in my own 'Batman' stories, so I know from personal experience how hard it is to get over facts at the same time as telling an entertaining tale. Too often, one suffers at the expense of the other. But by using super-heroes in an entirely consistent, but much more 'real' way, you've achieved a great balance.
As a writer who always wanted to be an artist, I envy your ability to do both. You've told a fine story with good, solid art--with Norm Breyfogle batting for you, you won't go wrong. He's my favorite 'Batman' artist of the past decade (maybe even longer). My hat's off to you--only someone who tried it could know how hard CAPTAIN AWARENESS was to achieve. And the fact that you're self-publishing it garners even more of my respect.
Few projects deserve to succeed as much as does CAPTAIN AWARENESS. As an ex-student myself, I know you've hit on the right way to grab attention and get over the facts. Yeah, prevention IS the best cure...and if there's any justice, CAPTAIN AWARENESS will not only prevent much harm, but be a commercial success as well. I think you've started something that'll take on its own momentum."
--Alan Grant, writer, DC Comics' BATMAN: SHADOW
OF THE BAT

"I must admit, after hearing your initial idea of a 'comic book' super-hero advocating prevention and awareness of violence on school campuses, I was prepared not to like the book.
However, CAPTAIN AWARENESS is indeed a unique approach to improve awareness of violence on our school campuses. I actually appreciated the story line, the effort to address some of the myths surrounding assault, and the reader-friendly approach that makes it a useful prevention tool or resource for middle and high school students.
Studies show the number one prevention against assault is awareness, and any effort that results in the prevention of one assault is well worth the endeavor. I cannot imagine any organization and/or agency that is concerned about the increase in violence in this country and on the campuses of our learning institutions, at all grade levels, not endorsing this novel approach to increase awareness.
I applaud your efforts and tenacity. As long as the will of one person is forced upon another, no effort to educate should be overlooked or neglected."

Advocate Program
